If you are a fan of Mexican food and you are in San Diego, you are certainly in the right place.

Tacos in all flavors, types, and sizes are a very popular dish that can be enjoyed for a quick stop meal or enjoyed in a restaurant with friends or family.

Puretaco in Carlsbad

 

1. PureTaco – 2742 State St suite 102, Carlsbad, CA 92008

This new modern American taqueria is a fast-casual restaurant that opened in 2021 and continues to be busy all times of the day. The restaurant offers a wraparound patio for outdoor dining along with a couple seats at the indoor/outdoor bar. Most known for their hand-pressed tortillas, you can enjoy traditional chicken, shrimp, pulled pork, and veggie tacos, naming just a few favorites on the menu. Haustay faves are the pho beef and the green curry shrimp. The owner of Pure Taco also owns a local favorite in another Carlsbad neighborhood of Bressi Ranch called Casero Taqueria.

2. Casero Taqueria – 2674 Gateway Rd #195, Carlsbad, CA 92009

Casero Taqueria offers mazing customer service with indoor and outdoor dining and relaxing ambiance. The outdoor area has an amazing view and is beautifully decorated with comfy couch pillows for an ideal and relaxing lunch or dinner.

In case you don’t want to leave your 4 legged friend at home, they allow dogs in the patio!

The food is delicious, some recommendations are the Mexican Cobb, Baja fish taco and burrito. And of course, Margaritas are a must.

3. Fresco Cocina – 2858 Carlsbad Blvd, Carlsbad, CA 92008

This new trendy hot spot is one you won’t want to miss, whether you’re looking to get a crafty cocktail lounging on the couch at the bar with some apps, or wanting a full dining experience, this modern Latin inspired restaurant won’t disappoint. They offer heated and covered outdoor seating, private parties, a full bar with happy hour specials, and you can even order catering services if you decide you want to continue taking in the views from your cozy temporary home while still experiencing some of Carlsbad’s finest. A few favorite tacos to add to your list are the chile sweet potato and you can’t go wrong with the fish of the day. The owner of this restaurant also has a sister property in downtown called 264 Fresco, which is an Italian inspired eatery.

 

4. Senior Grubby’s – 377 Carlsbad Village Dr, Carlsbad, CA 92008

Founded in 2008 in the heart of Carlsbad Village, Señor Grubby’s offers true authentic Mexican food, a great family atmosphere, and an award-winning cocktail bar.

A great atmosphere to enjoy with family and friends, the service is fantastic, and they have an amazing staff. Be sure you go on Tuesday and get ready for a fabulous Happy Hour!!

 

 

5. Miramar Fish Taco & Beer – 41 Douglas Dr, Oceanside, CA 92058

Family owned and operated Miramar Fish Taco and Beer serves up authentic Mexican cuisine that features seafood and beef options.

They offer two styles of tacos; Baja and Sinaloa and lots of craft beers to choose from.

Something fun to keep in mind is that they change the menu every six months to keep the menu fresh while rotating through your favorite classics.

 

 

6. The Taco Stand Encinitas – 642 S Coast Hwy 101, Encinitas, CA 92024

Inspired by the taco stands of Tijuana and Baja Peninsula, the Taco Stand offers up authentic Mexican grub with handmade corn tortillas, grade meats, and the freshest ingredients used to make their guacamole and salsas from scratch daily! In addition to delicious tacos and burritos, they also have a great selection of Mexican flavored popsicles, refreshments, imported beer, and freshly prepared Rosarito-style churros. Be sure to try the camaron (spicy shrimp) tacos.

 

7. Fish Shop – Encinitas – 1010 S Coast Hwy 101, Encinitas, CA 92024

The Fish Shop originally opened in Pacific Beach in 2010 serving up the freshest seafood and fish. Now they also have a location in Encinitas and are complimented with outstanding service in a relaxed atmosphere that is both family- and dog-friendly.

They hand-make all their seasonings and sauces and hand-cut their fries and onion rings daily. There are over 2,000 combinations to choose from so get ready!!

 

 

8. City Tacos – Encinitas – 1031 S Coast Hwy 101 Ste A101 Encinitas, CA 92024

Be prepared as City Tacos will almost always have a long wait time but the food is stellar so it’s worth the wait!

Combining traditional recipes with SoCal flavor to make their tacos unique, they offer meat, fish, vegetarian, and even Paleo options offering something for every taste with creative salsas to customize each bite.

We recommend the Pescado and portobello tacos. They serve four different salsa with tacos which are all tasty. And extra points for a dog friendly patio dining with a few tabletop fire pits!

 

 

9. Urbana Del Mar – 12841 EL CAMINO REAL #200 Del Mar highlands, Del Mar, CA 92130

At Urbana Del Mar, you can expect tasty, high-quality food and a cool vibe!

Their tacos have so much flavor, down to their homemade corn tortillas. Their spicy margaritas have their own distinctive taste and look.

The fish taco is great, but they also have other things on the menu that worth the try If you want to be a little extra, order the old-fashioned.

 

 

10. The Brigantine – 3263 Camino Del Mar, Del Mar, CA 92014

Enjoy ocean or racetrack views with a relaxed and happy Cali vibe. Owned by The Morton family, they opened the first restaurant on Shelter Island in 1969.

The Brigantine signature is their passion for quality seafood, family values, and seasoned restaurant experience. You will taste years of hard work, innovation, and commitment to good food.

The Crispy Lobster Tempura Taco is a must!

Make sure to make a reservation in advance and do not worry about the parking as they offer valet.

St Patrick’s Day festivities are beginning to pop up around San Diego, be sure to plan ahead so you don’t miss out on the fun opportunities to wear green, have some fun, and celebrate this holiday centered around the culture and heritage of the Irish. Here are 10 festivities that’ll get you outside, inside, and rocking out during the week of St. Patrick’s Day.

 

1. 40th Annual Saint Patrick’s Day Parade

Starting with the big events, the 40th Annual San Diego St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Festival will be taking place in Balboa Park. This event is family friendly, and free to attend, with a parade and festival. 3. San Diego Leprechaun Run

Running for fun and being green about it, the San Diego Leprechaun Run will be hosting its 5th Annual run for adults and kids. 4. St. Paddy’s Day O’Beach Party

If your rainbow leads to a pot of gold where the sand meets the surf, then check out the St. Paddy’s O’Beach Party. This beach party will be a rocking event, beginning with a beach 5k fun run and offering plenty of entry prizes to festivalgoers, including a corned beef invitational (corn hole contest), and a San Diego twist of the green, a guacamole contest for best Guac in Ocean Beach.

My personal favorite, the Dublin Benedict and one of their signature Bloody Mary’s.

 

 

8. Celebrate at the best Irish Pub in the area

Perhaps you would like to go somewhere the Irish go, and that would be O’Sullivan’s Irish Pub and Restaurant in Escondido. With their Céad Míle Fáilte (One Hundred Thousand Welcomes), you’ll feel like you’re being greeted by old friends. This is a place to dive into: eat, drink, and be Irish. It’s been voted Best Irish Pub for the last five years.

 

 

9. Visit the Bier Garden in Encinitas

The Bier Garden in Encinitas should be a part of your St. Patrick’s Day if you’re looking for a place that’ll offer a gourmet twist on traditional food. With their Corned Beef & Cabbage and a pint of Guinness, Black and Tans, or Irish car bombs, your appetite will be satisfied. Just be sure to wear green, after indulging in some delicious libations and tasty meals, it’ll be hard to run from the pinches you’ll get if you’re not in the festive spirit.

 

 

10. Go to a new brewery in North County San Diego

From Oceanside to Solana Beach, it’s a safe bet the local breweries in the area will be offering up their versions of St. Patrick’s Day food and beers with specials for the day. From your traditional Irish stouts, ales, and lagers to unique spins, these local breweries should be a top priority for those looking for something festive.

Did we miss anything? San Diego offers parades and celebrations suitable for the family and your little leprechauns, and parties or pub crawls with green beer for the grown-ups. This St. Patrick’s Day, dress in green, rally the friends/family and celebrate the one day a year where we’re all Irish.

The Oceanside Harbor is a charming and relaxing place to visit!  The only harbor between Orange County and San Diego, Oceanside is a wonderful location for those traveling by sea along the California shoreline. The Harbor has a fuel dock, launch ramp, bait receiver, and slip rentals available.

You’ll find about two miles of sidewalk to stroll, which will take you around the entire Harbor. There are benches and picnic tables for relaxing.  You’ll enjoy grabbing a bite to eat or drink at one of the many beautiful Harbor dining options. Park for free along the road or in one of the many lots.  We have gathered some Oceanside Harbor excursions to partake in while staying at a Haustay property in Oceanside, California!

 

Whale & Dolphin Tours

Join in on the adventure as you set sail in search of your special sighting of dolphins and whales with Oceanside Whale Watching. Climb aboard a luxury, single-level vessel that provides fun for all ages. Tours are 2 hours long, and depending on the time of year, you have a chance to see gray whales, minke whales, humpbacks, fin whales, and all 4 species of dolphins. You may even get lucky and see orcas, pilot whales, turtles, sharks, and of course a lot of sun fish and sea lions. Tickets range from $45-$55 per person for your seat on the catamaran.

 

 

Visit The California Surf Museum

The California Surf Museum was founded in 1986 and has continued to serve visitors from over 40 nations annually and has grown to be a major attraction for Oceanside. The current exhibits they have out for visitors is the story of Bethan Hamilton, the Timeline of Surfboards, the Evolution of the Boogie Board, Donald Takayama: Shaping Boards and Lives, and Wave Science! Open to the public daily from 10-4pm, you can get an adult ticket for $7 per person, and children 11 and under can visit for free!

 

Go Deep Sea Fishing

Deep sea sportfishing: Helgren’s Sportfishing is a family-owned company that has been operating out of the Oceanside Harbor for 45 years! With 3 different vessels to choose from, and half-day to multi-day excursions, or the option of a private charter, you can select the fishing trip that best suits your needs. Excursion packages range from $75-$300 per person.

 

 

Get A Surf Lesson

You can’t visit San Diego without squeezing in a surf lesson if you don’t already know how to surf. Oceanside Harbor’s North County Surf Academy offers different rates and packages to fit all different skill levels. They offer private one on one lessons, semi-private lessons for 2 or 3 surfers, group surf lessons, and advanced surfing lessons that include video review. Lessons range from $90-$400 per person depending on what your needs are, but you’ll be sure to have a fun, safe time out on the water.

 

 

Rent A Boat

Take matters into your own hands with a boat rental of your own to explore San Diego’s hidden gem that is Oceanside. With views north of the harbor of USMC Camp Pendleton beachfront, and to the south you have the beautiful San Diego coastline, it’ll be sure to be a cruisy good time. At Boat Rentals of America, you have the options of renting jet skis, powerboats, electric Duffy boats, and even stand-up paddle boards or single or double kayaks. Boat rentals range from $95 per hour and up depending on the style of boat you are looking for, and the length of the trip. Don’t forget to check their website to see if they’re offering any online specials!

 

 

Slow Down & Bird Watch

Wildlife and bird watching has become popular in Oceanside, with great viewing opportunities in the harbor. Buena Vista Audubon is a program that helps foster knowledge and appreciation for plants and animals within the community, and also home of a nature center and museum in Oceanside that you can visit to deepen your knowledge on birding and conservation.

 

 

Warm Up With A Beach Bonfire

Bonfires on the beach in the harbor are allowed in designated city fire rings only but are not permitted during the hours of 11pm-6am. Obviously you must always attend to your fire, and if you wish to barbecue, you can do so with an elevated off ground BBQ of your own. There are 2 city designated fire pit areas in the harbor: on the beachside by the North Jetty, and on the east side of the general/RV parking lot at the very north end of the harbor. So don’t forget to pack up your smores kit and hot cocoa, because you can’t find a better spot to enjoy a sunset than a front row spot on the beach enjoying the warmth of your fire!

 

 

Check Out The Pier

If you’re looking to take a nice one mile walk down the beach from the harbor to the pier, you can experience pier fishing on your own! The nice thing about fishing the pier is there are not permits required and is best known for its halibut and sea bass fishing. You also have easy access to food vendors, and bait and tackle shops. If you’re looking to just take a leisurely stroll on the historic wooden pier, come March 2023, a new seafood take-out kiosk will be opening at the end of the pier to satisfy all your seafood needs while catching the sunset and watching the local surfers get barreled. Their full restaurant is also scheduled to be opening late Summer 2023.

 

Shop Local At The Farmer’s Market

Oceanside is home of 2 popular farmers markets on Thursday’s open all year round- Oceanside Farmers Market from 9am-1pm and Oceanside Sunset Market from 5-9pm, both conveniently located on Mainstreet where you can stroll to gather fresh local fruits and vegetables and enjoy the shops and restaurants lining the downtown streets, while listening to vibrant local musicians fill the air with fun and excitement!

According to Urban Dictionary, Galentine’s Day- celebrated on February 13th, the day before Valentine’s Day, is a day to honor all your gal-pal relationships, whether you’re single or not, and shower them with love and attention!

Also offering gluten free/vegan (also known as the Vlugen doughnut), dairy free, and 100% Kosher certified doughnut options, there’s something for everyone on the menu. 5. VG Donuts & Bakery – 106 Aberdeen Dr, Cardiff, CA 92007

This full-service bakery located in Cardiff-by-the-Sea specializes in an old-fashioned style of baking that has been thriving since 1969. VG, or “Very Good” is a local favorite offering a variety of pastries, muffins, cookies, bread, desserts, and cakes for all occasions, including weddings. Fun fact- VG is also known to make the most reasonably priced wedding cakes in San Diego! When it’s the holiday season, VG’s creates a delicious holiday menu with festive desserts, traditional baked goods, pies, and cookies.

Located in Carlsbad, this doughnut dealer has perfected and crafted the finest locally sourced ingredient doughnuts, with gluten free and vegan options available every day. Popular doughnut flavors include the Vermont Maple Bacon, Classic Tahitian Vanilla Glaze with Sprinkles, Boston Cream, and Nutella Buttercream!

 

7. Sidecar Doughnuts – 3435 Del Mar Heights Rd d7, San Diego, CA 92130

This doughnut trendsetter is located in Del Mar and known to cause a long line, but it’s worth the wait! Offering weekly gluten free options and monthly vegan options, you can check out all of their rotating flavor options on their social media pages, including the seasonal flavors. When a biologist, chemist, creative writer, a gelato chef, yoga teacher, feng shui master, screenplay editor, business designer, food director, a few pilots, techno geek, surfer, and a photographer came together, they created GelatoLove, a tasting room and gelato lab in Carlsbad! GelatoLove is a bright gelato shop serving gourmet Italian ice cream in eclectic flavors, espresso specialties, and European desserts which include different flavors of gelato cakes. Not only do they offer indoor and outdoor dining, but they offer gelato making classes for a hands-on experience.

Established in 2004, Yummy Cupcakes was one of the first “cupcake only” bakeries to hit the scene, and almost 20 years and 400 different cupcake flavors and recipes later, they have now expanded to 3 different locations. The location closest to us is in Encinitas, and some of the shop specialties are Cupcake in a Jar, Cupcake on a Stick, Cupcake Pies, Cupcake Truffles, and the list goes on…if it’s a sweet treat, it can be made into a cupcake and offered at Yummy Cupcakes!

 

12. Solana Sumptuous Cookies – 150 Solana Hills Dr, Solana Beach, CA 92075

Serving gourmet hand crafted Artisan cookies and old fashioned craft ice cream, which were inspired by generations of American, Spanish, and Latin America baking traditions, “the best cookies in the universe” can be found in Solana Beach. Voted “Best Bakery” in 2017, this spot located in La Jolla offers a variety of scratch-made sweet treats and pride themselves on their boujee rice krispie treats, the pastry bar, cookies, cupcakes, and so much more! They also offer signature cakes, custom cakes, and wedding cakes, all which can be made gluten free as well. Head Chef Maeve has also been known to make many celebrity appearances on game shows on the Food Network along with hosting her own YouTube channel with delicious recipes and tips!

While it doesn’t actually snow in San Diego, there is a list of places to visit that will actually have real snow! So, dress accordingly and plan on a fun day of sledding and snow angels. Check out these spots in Escondido, Oceanside, and the Del Mar Fairgrounds.

Where to see Christmas lights

There are so many neighborhoods that really go all out when it comes to decorating. Pack up the kids and drive around to see the sights. Plan to leave early as a lot of these homes can get crowded. Also, bring cash. Some of the homes will sell hot chocolate, cookies or other treats.  Bring this Christmas scavenger hunt print out with you to add to the fun! Visit Marisa Lane in Encinitas for 3 cul-de-sacs all lit up. In Carlsbad visit Ammonite Court and the Carlsbad Christmas House at 6646 Elegant Tern Place. The Carlsbad Christmas House transforms into Santa’s Village complete with a letterbox to drop off your letters to Santa and you’ll even get a reply from him! Every year on Dec. 14th they host a community party with hot chocolate, mulled wine and other holiday treats!

Visit a Christmas tree farm

If you want to experience the magic of picking and cutting your own Christmas tree, visit one of these spots. The Family Christmas Tree Farm in El Cajon offers delivery and welcomes dogs. Highland Valley Christmas Tree Farm in Ramona is a great place to spend the day as they offer wine, Italian food, live music on the weekends and plenty of kid activities. They will also cut and net the tree for you!

Go ice skating by the sea

Between November 17th to January 1st, enjoy a truly magical experience ice skating by the sea at the famous Hotel Del in Coronado. Take in views of the Pacific while also benefiting the Make-A-Wish San Diego. Carlsbad’s newest casual, vintage clubhouse setting offers views overlooking the 18th hole of the Arnold Palmer inspired golf course at the Aviara Hotel. The chef, Richard Blais, is most recently known for being the first winner of Bravo’s Top Chef All-Stars and continues to make regular appearances as a judge on the show, along with making appearances on several other culinary competitions, and has impeccable culinary experience including training at The French Laundry. Here at Ember & Rye you can enjoy indoor or heated outdoor dining, one-of-a-kind craft cocktails from the full bar, private dining, and it’s also a good spot for groups and families. This new modern American taqueria is a fast-casual restaurant that opened a year ago and continues to be busy all times of the day. The restaurant offers a wraparound patio for outdoor dining along with a couple seats at the indoor/outdoor bar. Most known for their hand-pressed tortillas, you can enjoy traditional chicken, shrimp, pulled pork, and veggie tacos, naming just a few favorites on the menu. The owner of Pure Taco also owns a local favorite in another Carlsbad neighborhood of Bressi Ranch called Casero Taqueria.

7. Lofty Coffee

Just like it’s neighbor, Pure Taco, this coffee shop is also trending since it opened and is a great spot to read a book, catch up on some computer work, or just sit back and relax while sipping on some coffee and enjoying the fresh air outdoors. Not only do they offer a wide selection of warm and cold drinks to sip on, but they offer a delicious menu of food items for breakfast and lunch!

8. Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream

You can’t come to Carlsbad without making a pitstop at this ever so popular ice cream shop. This hot spot is known for their over 100 ice cream flavors that’s all made fresh every day. Handel’s has been around since 1945 but just recently made a home in downtown Carlsbad, so if you ever see this creamery with little to no line be sure to hop in because this line is known to be long during peak hours.

1. Encinitas Street Fair

Kick off the holidays with some shopping, kids rides, live entertainment, and food and drinks, as vendors have been lining up the streets for over 30 years to prepare North County for Christmas. This 1-day event will hit the streets November 20th from 9am-5pm, on PCH between D and J streets. Don’t forget to BYO-Bag!

 

 

2. December Nights in Balboa Park

This 2-day family friendly celebration is the largest FREE event in the county this holiday season. You can enjoy festive lights, amazing food, and some fun and entertainment for all. The sights and sounds of the holidays fill the air as the museums and cultural institutions in Balboa Park, the nation’s largest urban cultural park, open their doors free of charge. 3. Holiday at the Rancho

Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park in Carlsbad transforms into a Christmas spectacular for an evening of music, crafts, cookie decorating, Santa visits, and their tree lighting ceremony. Guests can also shop for handmade holiday gifts at their craft boutique. Don’t forget more blankets and chairs, snacks and hot cocoa for a holiday movie viewing of Home Alone on the big screen outdoors starting at 6pm. 4. Encinitas Holiday Parade

Thousands of people will be on floats and performing in bands while thousands and thousands more will be cheering them on as the parade rolls along PCH. This year’s theme is “Classic Encinitas” where you’ll be sure to see classic cars and fashion, music, and Encinitas legends. This family friendly parade will be a celebration for all ages. This FREE parade will take place on December 3, 2022 from 5:30-7:30pm, so pack the jackets and blankets to bundle up, chairs to relax in, and snacks and warm festive drinks.

 

5. Oceanside Harbor Parade of Lights

This boat parade has been an Oceanside tradition that started almost 30 years ago so don’t forget to mark your calendar to attend this annual event. The parade includes a fun spectacle of boats all shapes and sizes decorated in their most festive holiday attire including lights, ornaments, and even some holiday costumes with a few Santa sightings. Not only is this a boat parade, but it’s a contest too where the best decorated boats will be awarded prizes. This FREE event will be on December 10, 2022 at the Oceanside Harbor starting at 7pm but be sure to arrive early and dress warm, bring blankets and chairs, don’t forget the snacks and hot cocoa.

Your mattress choice can either earn glowing reviews or be the result in a less-than five-star review, so invest in comfort. Memory foam mattresses are surprisingly inexpensive and are more durable than spring mattresses (no more broken coils).

Wear and tear, spills, dirt and dust happens. As do the dreaded bed bugs.  A mattress encasement is your first line of defense that will help you extend the life of your mattress. Just toss it in the washing machine with the rest of your bedding at the end of each stay. At Haustay, we use this encasement on all of our mattresses.

 

Soft Sheets & A Light Comforter

When it comes to sheets, the key is to use crisp, all-white sheets, which are also easier to wash and replace. At Haustay we use easy care microfiber sheets that are fade, stain, shrink and wrinkle resistant. They dry quickly and are more durable than cotton. We prefer to always use bright-white sheets.

We utilize a cool-weather, lightweight quilts at all of our properties. It is suitable for all season use and we prefer the lighter quilts so they can be washed after each stay.

It is important to keep an extra sheet set and quilt (per bed) tucked away in case of any spills or accidents.

 

Two Pillows Per Person

Pillows are a very important item in the bedroom. We always offer both firm and soft pillows to give our guests options. For an eye-pleasing effect, layer your pillows. Start with large square Euro pillows, followed by sleeping pillows, then add decorative throw pillows or a lumbar to pull your look together.

 

Window Coverings

It is important to have curtains, blinds, or roller shades to blocks out light for guests who prefer to sleep in complete darkness. This is also helpful for families traveling with babies.

Overhead lighting doesn’t always create a cozy and soft light to ease into sleep. Guests appreciate a lamp on each side of the bed so they can catch up on work or read a book. We recommend placing at least one dresser or drawer storage piece in the bedroom, so your guests don’t have to live out of their suitcase.
